Illinois Rafting this weekend

Flows are looking great for the Illinois this coming weekend. Should be a good time. Predicted flows are at 3500 CFS! Whoohoo - it's stompy. Illinois River Rafting in Southern Oregon... it is hard to beat.

The Illinois is a tributary of the Oregon's Rogue River, which is one of the original 8 Wild and Scenic Rivers. It's a class III and IV river, but at high water definitely gets a class V feeling.

Two whitewater rafting outfitters explain how they are using social media tools to help sell their rafting trips on the Kern River, Rogue River, and Middle Fork of the Salmon River.

WOFFORD HEIGHTS, CALIF - On Monday after a day of guiding an Upper Kern River rafting trip, Ryan Guy, a guide for Kern River Outfitters based in Wofford Heights, California, sits at a computer inside the company’s warehouse and logs into Twitter. The computer is located immediately below an enormous calendar dotted with whitewater rafting trips to come, the number of customers per trip, and spaces available. Guy, glancing up briefly, begins to type a “tweet” – the short messages that the popular social network is know for – as he reads aloud, “Our one-day Upper Kern rafting trip on June 12th has some space available.”

The notion that computers and the internet do not have a place in the outdoors may be a diminishing belief, at least in the sense of attracting new-age customers. As leaders in the outdoor industry look for ways of finding new customers they are turning to an unlikely source for outdoor-minded individuals – the internet.

Will Volpert introduced Kern River Outfitters to Facebook and Twitter last Fall. He says that online networks have increased the company’s visibility where it matters most: their target market of families in the Southern California region. Most online social networks make reaching your target market easier than in traditional media advertising. On Facebook, for instance, one can target ads to specific age groups, genders, marital statuses, and interests. For businesses in the outdoor industry, being able to pin-point exactly who sees their advertisements not only saves marketing dollars but increases conversion rates from prospective clients to real-life customers.

When every dollar counts, online viral marketing seems to be the trend for small and big business alike. In an effort to increase their number of followers on Twitter, Idaho & Oregon River Journeys, an outfitter specializing in rafting trips on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho and the Rogue River in Oregon, set-aside a specific rafting trip as a “Twittertrip” just for Twitter followers. According to Jim Ritter, Idaho & Oregon River Journeys’ manager, “We thought it would be something that people would talk about. It’s been mentioned in a few other social-media networks.” That “buzz” is a key element in viral marketing because “it’s always better to have someone within a social-circle introduce your business rather than opening the door yourself,” Ritter adds.

“I really believe that our social-media presence will someday be more important than our actual website,” says Guy, who now shuts down the computer and leans against a stack of inflated whitewater rafts at the Kern River Outfitters warehouse. “For people who enjoy being outside so much, we sure spend an awful amount of time on the computer.” He adds, “and what we believe is that our customers do too.”

Middle Fork Salmon Information

A new site is up for Middle Fork of the Salmon information. It is at www.MiddleForkSalmon.org and has a wealth of information for private boaters and folks looking for commercial trips on the Middle Fork.

The Middle Fork of the Salmon is a beautiful river. Those who get to float it are treated to 100 pristine miles of designated Wild and Scenic river, all while floating through the heart of the Frank Church- River of No Return Wilderness Area. The Frank Church is 2.3 million acres in size, making it the largest managed Wilderness Area in the Lower 48.

There is also a basic Middle Fork Salmon map on the new site, which users can copy and paste and print for their trip. It's definitely worth checking out!

Kern River Rafting

Today National Geographic Adventure released their survey of the best adventure travel outfitters on earth. Kern River Outfitters and Idaho & Oregon River Journeys made the top list.

Kern River Outfitters is based in Wofford Heights, CA, and offers trips on the Lower, Upper, and Forks of the Kern. The Forks of the Kern is considered one of the - if not the- best wilderness class V run in the world.

Idaho & Oregon River Journeys is based in Salmon, ID, and offers rafting vacations on the Middle Fork and Main Salmon (in Idaho) and the Rogue River in Oregon. Their trips are between three and six-days in length and float through some of the most remote wilderness areas in the Lower 48.

EddyFlower proudly presents the second annual “EddyFlower Vertical Challenge”, a contest of endurance, skill and mental determination. The competition is simple: you and your paddling buddies paddle as many runs as you can endure for 32 days and, to give your paddling purpose, the challenge involves raising funds for young adults with cancer. At the end of the event, the team in each division with the most vertical feet is crowned champion.

The Vertical Challenge opens at sunrise May 15 and closes sunset June 15.
Open to all paddlers, from all states (including Canada), of all skill levels.
Compete for prizes in one of six divisions (Open, Class V, Class IV, Class III, Weekend Warrior, Womens) that best match your team's skill level.
All funds raised go to First Descents a kayaking camp for young adults with cancer.
Drives new American Whitewater memberships to protect and restore America's rivers.

FUNDRAISER
EddyFlower has partnered with First Descents to raise money for a great cause. What better reason to paddle when every stroke you take raises money for young adults with cancer! First Descents offers young adults with cancer outdoor experiences that will forever change their lives. The 2007 EddyFlower Vertical Challenge competitors raised over $7,500 and sent seven youth to kayak camp.

The goal is for each member on each team to raise as many donations as possible during the event for First Descents. All donations raised go directly to First Descents to provide cancer survivors with a free, week long kayak camp in Colorado. The top 3 individuals who raise the most donations for First Descents win a new Dagger Nomad 8.5, Aquabond Carbon Paddle, and WRSI Helmet. RULES
All registered teams and individuals must abide by all event rules. Teams or individuals failing to adhere to the following rules may be disqualified at the discretion of the event staff. Prizes will not be awarded to teams or individuals that do not follow the rules or are suspected of cheating.

• Competition begins sunrise May 15 and ends sunset June 15.
• Maximum team size: 5
• Minimum team size: 1
• Competitors can only be registered on one team.
• No solo paddling. A minimum of two paddlers required on a descent in order to receive credit for the run. Second paddler does not have to be a team member.
• You must stop to help if you see another boater in trouble.
• Single run limitation set at 5 runs per team member i.e. each team member can only run one section of river 5 times.
• Must use put-ins and take-outs defined for the runs listed eddyflower.com for competition credit.
• Must complete entire run to earn vertical feet. Portaging unrunnable and unsafe rapids is acceptable. Running laps on one drop or few drops doesn't contribute to your teams vertical feet.
• $10 per person registration covers insurance fee for ACA insurance. All competitors must fillout, sign and fax an ACA Waiver. Fax waiver to 720.519.0708.
• Teams may recruit a new team member(s) if you have an open spot(s) during the competition, however, no trading people in and out once the comp starts.
• Each team must have a team captain. Team Captains will be the point person for all communications with EddyFlower before, during and after the event.
• Teams must register, pay insurance, and turn in waiver by May 14 to be eligible to compete.
• Teams are responsible for entering in run and donation information as soon as possible, and must be within 48 hours of the descent or are subject to disqualification. See Standings section for details.
• Honor system applies, team member registration requires real First Name, Last Name, and Email Address. Anonominity doesn't work well with the Honor System concept.
• Prizes will not be awarded to teams that do not follow the rules or are suspected of cheating.

EddyFlower.com will provide real-time event standings reports. These report web pages will include up to date standings for each division including.

Illinois River Trip!

Just got off a FABULOUS Illinois river trip. We had a great group of people, six SOU students (Amanda, Will, Dillon, Nick, Levi, and myself), one former SOU student (Dan), and Alan from Portland. Overall, great weather, good flows, and spectacular company. A trip report has been posted on OregonRafting.org. It has lots of great photos, a cool video, and short write-up about the trip. What a wonderful weekend! We rafted the Illinois River in Southern Oregon and had great weather and good flows. There were six of us: Chip, Ursula, Creatch, Jen, Will, and myself. We had a really great time and even got the chance to explore a little bit. Rogue River Journeys let us base our trip out of their Selma guide palace and everything went very smoothly. Thank you RRJ!

We stayed at Pine Flat the first night and our second night at a beautiful waterfall camp about a mile below Collier Creek.

28 days without seeing or hearing from my favorite heroes ever is far too long. Oh, how depressed I am in a life lacking of Leland or Will! Perhaps I will see them soon. If I do I will certainly have to purchase them a beer, for they will be parched from a long month of rescuing innocent children and saving wild animals, like a penguin.

Leland or Will, if either of you get this post please come home soon! I miss you guys soooooooo much it is simply unBEARable.... :(

My Heroes

Everyone should have heroes in life. Heroes are people who we should strive to become similar to. Ghandi is a good hero and so is Babe Ruth. My personal heroes are two gentlemen named Leland Fulton and Will Volpert.

Both of these two incredibly wonderful people are my favorite people of all time because of how much fun they are! Leland is really good at remembering names of plants. He can tell you the name and then tell you why it was called that. Like, "little apples." Will can't do that very well but he plays a mean guitar, like it will make you cry, and he can recite some parts of the alphabet backwards. INCREDIBLE!!! Due to these reasons, it is obvious why these two are my heroes.

Illinois River Trip

Here's a video from a 2-day Illinois river trip that I did with a bunch of "cool cats" (Leland Fulton, copyrighted) on November 17/18, 2007. The water was huge and fun and incredible. What a great adventure!
